The functional layout of airport facilities represents a very early design stage, roughly allocating essential process areas based on capacity calculations and assumptions. The layout sketches main design approaches, level concepts, major passenger flows and gross commercial areas. During this planning stage the traffic forecast and herewith the functional layout undergoes several changes and the detailisation of the planning process is kept to a minimum, allowing short reaction times and production of decision making processes.
